The Wounds of a Friend

Faithful are the wounds of a friend. —Proverbs 27:6

ODB 2008 02 Feb 11, 2008

Not everyone appreciates correction, but David did. He felt indebted to those who corrected him and realized how much he owed them. “Let the righteous strike me; it shall be a kindness. Let him rebuke me; it shall be as excellent oil; let my head not refuse it” (Ps. 141:5).

Correction is a kindness, David insists, a word that suggests an act of loyalty. Loyal friends will correct one another, even when it’s painful and disruptive to relationships to do so. It’s one of the ways we show love and help one another to grow stronger. As Proverbs 27:6 states: “Faithful are the wounds of a friend.”

It takes grace to give godly correction; it takes greater grace to receive it. Unlike David, who accepted Nathan’s correction (2 Sam. 12:13), we’re inclined to refuse it. We resent the interference; we do not want to be found out. But if we accept the reproof, we will find that it does indeed become “excellent oil” on our heads, an anointing that makes our lives a sweet aroma wherever we go.

Growth in grace sometimes comes through the kind but unpleasant correction of a loyal friend. Do not refuse it, for “he who receives correction is prudent” (Prov. 15:5) and “wise” (9:8-9). - David H. Roper

When others give us compliments,
They are so easy to believe;
And though it’s wise to take rebukes,
We find them harder to receive.  —Sper

Correction from a loyal friend can help us change for the better.

First Wog in 2008

Yups. I've gone for my first wog for the year on Tuesday, 8 Jan 2008. And... it rained!

So, the soggy wogger is alive and well, and soggy as ever.

Splashed thru 10kms around MacRitchie. Same ol' route from the start of the trail (after the canoeing hut) 'til the end at the zig-zag bridge. It took a slow 1h 22m 9s.

Still not consistent in going for runs. Lots of inertia, not helped by lots of fat.

Planning to forget about timing etc and just enjoy regular wogs in the MacRitchie area. Maybe I'll try exploring some new trails. I've always wanted to head out towards the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, but the total distance out and back (plus allowances for getting lost) seems a bit daunting...

StanChart Marathon 2007

I've finally completed a full marathon

Wasn't even sure if I'd attempt it this year as I haven't been training and I'm 3kgs heavier than last year when I attempted the run but didn't complete it.

On the night before the marathon, I received an unexpected but much appreciate SMS from Pastor Noel. He told me that he would pray for God's grace to see me thru to run and also gave me some good practical pointers. Feeling much encouraged after that, I decided to attempt the run.

Tho' my calves started cramping at 28kms, I managed to hold off full-blown cramps by walking, stretching, massaging my legs, and praying (not necessarily in that order) frequently, all the way back to the finish line. The last 14kms involved a lot more walking than jogging. Praise God that I didn't cramp up completely like last year.

Here's a pic of the GPS track of the route...

And here's a pic of my "Finisher's T-Shirt"...

My timing was poor (6 hrs 19 mins) but I'm happy to have completed the run.
